1956: The Conscription Act entered into force  
On July 25, 1956, the Conscription Act, which had only been adopted a short time earlier, entered into force. The act introduced and regulated compulsory military service in the Federal Republic of Germany. Peacetime military service was compulsory for men aged between 18 and 45 and, in the event of war, until the age of 60.
