Born in The Hague and spent many years travelling throughout Europe and Surinam. His first novel was published in 1955. Numerous short stories, short novels, novels and poems followed. He contemplates time, death and the actual writing process in his literature. His most famous works are "Rituals" and "Berlin Notes". In 1993 he was awarded the European Prize for Literature. |
