14.11.1840: Claude Monet (6.12.1926) |
 |
French painter Claude Monet was born in Paris on this day in 1840. The founder and arguably the most important painter of the French impressionist movement, which took its name from his 1872 painting, "Impression, Sunrise." Impressionism, according to Monet, should reproduce the frozen moment, the natural impression, instead of giving a specific statement. Monet, along with other Impressionist painters such as Camille Pissaro (who he met in 1859), August Renoir and Alfred Sisley, used complementary colors in their paintings, which were characterized by free, loose brushwork. |
