8.12.1881: Fire at the Viennese Ring Theatre |

450 people lost their lives in a fire at the Viennese Ring Theatre in Austria in 1881. Many of those trapped jumped to their deaths from the open balcony onto the street below. The tragedy was reflected in the new Austrian building code, which imposed strict regulations in 1882 to ensure that audiences be able to leave theatres quickly and safely in the case of emergency. |
