| 10.5.1981: Mitterand becomes President |
 |
| On May 10, 1981, Francois Mitterand was elected as France’s state president after defeating the officeholder Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. The Socialist president pursued a course of economic and political integration of his country within Europe. During his second term, Mitterand was compelled to nominate a conservative, Jacques Chirac, as prime minister. The socialist managed to beat his challenger Chirac in 1988 during the presidential elections despite this division of government business between differing parties. |
