360 Killed in Pit Disaster 1908: 360 Killed in Pit Disaster
12.11.1908: 360 Killed in Pit Disaster
Over 360 miners were killed in a firedamp explosion and subsequent pit fire at the Radbod mine in Bochum-Hoevel. A petrol lamp caused the disaster, from which only 40 miners were able to escape. When work resumed at the mine in 1909 electrical miner's lamps were introduced and the use of explosives was limited. The city of Hamm was supplied electricity from the mine since 1909, and when the supply was stopped after 80 years in 1990, some 2200 employees staged a sit-in in the pit.
