The French national assembly voted Charles de Gaulle Prime Minister of France on this day in 1945. De Gaulle led a three-party coalition until was forced to resign on 16th January, 1946 after inter-party quarreling and failure to reach agreement on the drafting of the new constitution. But he became Prime Minister once again in 1958 and helped to solve the Algerian crisis. After introducing a new constitution by means of a referendum, he successfully ended the war in Algeria in 1962, when the North African country achieved independence. He made France into a nuclear power and also normalized German-Franco relations.
