On Sept. 1, 1939, German dictator Adolf Hitler announced the beginning of the greatest catastrophe of the 20th century: “Tonight Poland opened fire with foot soldiers from within our own territories. We’ve returned the fire from 5.45 this morning and from now on we will match every bomb with a bomb of our own.”
