The eccentric German actor performed in films and plays for over 40 years and is particularly famous for his roles in Werner Herzog’s films, including "Aguirre: The Wrath of God" (1972), "Nosferatu, the Vampire" (1979) and "Fitzcarraldo" (1982). He emigrated from Poland to Germany as a child, and launched his acting career there after the end of the Second World War. He also played the villain in various 1960s Edgar Wallace films.
