14.7.1865: The Matterhorn is conquered
On July 14, 1865, a group of British climbers, headed by Edward Whymper, reached the peak of the Matterhorn ahead of the Italian Alpine team. They started out the previous day, camped on the eastern face and finished the ascent the following day. During the descent, one man slipped and fell 1000 meters with three of his colleagues. Only Whymper, Taugwalder and his son returned alive.
