Austro-Hungary declared war on Serbia. On June 28, the heir to the Austrian throne was assassinated in Sarajevo. Serbia missed the July 23 ultimatum and the Russian troops were mobilized. Serbia was conquered in mid-December. Preparations for war had begun long before in Europe, which was split into two blocks: the "Axis powers" and the "Entente powers."
