Lech Walesa was arrested by the Communist rulers in 1981. Two years later, he received the Nobel Peace Prize and was named 'Man of the Year' by Time magazine, The Financial Times, The London Observer, Die Welt, Die Zeit, LExpress, and Le Soir for his heroic efforts for workers rights in Poland. In December 1990 he was elected President of the Republic of Poland. He served until defeated in the election of November 1995, when he was replaced by the Social Democrat and former Communist Party official Aleksander Kwasniewski. |
